A Young WA State Dad's thought about why he whole heartedly supports PTA:
..."All that to say, I've had a fair amount of direct exposure to the difficulties facing our education system today, from early childhood education to high school graduates. And that was before my son was born.
So I was excited to join the PTA, because these problems we have absolutely can be solved. Not easily, not simply, and not without a lot of hard work, but they Can. Be. Solved. They can be solved by the oldest approach in the history of our form of democracy; grassroots activism. There is no force so powerful as a group of voices united in common cause, and whether it's a small group of parents, teachers, and students at a school collectively working for their own local good, or the rich, vibrant cacophony of the entire state membership, together our voice is immeasurably powerful.
And I want to be part of that voice. I want to be part of the discussion, the debate, and the disagreements; I want to be part of the conferencing, the collaboration, and the consensus. Because it really, honest and truly, isn't just about what's best for my son. It's about what's best for all of our children. What's good for all of our children is good for our own children as well.
So there you have it. To me, PT(S)A is about more than policy wonkery. It's more than fundraising and school events. It's a great bastion of citizen-driven democracy, an example of what people can collectively accomplish when they work together with an eye toward what a better tomorrow can be. I'm a husband, a father, a citizen, and I'm proud to be a member of the Washington State PTA."
